Kalah Mancala: from controls to your first round
Bring your attention to one round of Kalah Mancala. When either row of six pits is empty, remaining seeds go to their owner’s store. The larger store wins. Use the example below to understand a decision. Check the rule that explains your first action. Look at what changes after your first action.
Practice with a purpose
Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Use the example to check your reasoning.
Understand the aim
When either row of six pits is empty, remaining seeds go to their owner’s store. The larger store wins. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Notice how the game responds to your input.
The playing sequence
- Player 1 uses the bottom six pits; Player 2 uses the top six.
- Choose a non-empty pit on your side and sow its seeds one at a time.
- Include your own store but skip the opponent’s store. Ending in your store grants another turn.
- Ending in an empty pit on your own side captures that seed and the opposite seeds, when the opposite pit is non-empty.
Keyboard and screen controls
Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Look at the feedback after the action.
An example before you play
If your last seed reaches your store, you move again. If your row becomes empty, both stores are settled immediately. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Keep the controls nearby.
Where a round can go wrong
The stores are scoring areas, not pits you can choose. These are Kalah rules, not every Mancala variant. Compare the situation with the worked example. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
