4x4 Sudoku: from controls to your first round

Start 4x4 Sudoku by looking at the playing area and its controls. Fill all cells with 1–4; do not repeat a symbol in any row, column or region. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Bring this focus to a round

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Make the next step deliberately.

What you are aiming for

Fill all cells with 1–4; do not repeat a symbol in any row, column or region. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Check the rules when you are unsure.

The order of play

  1. Select an empty cell. The original clues cannot be edited.
  2. Choose a symbol from the number pad, or type it on a keyboard.
  3. Turn Notes on to record candidate symbols without committing an answer.
  4. Use Check entries to check your filled values. Hint reveals one value from the verified solution.
  5. Complete the board, or choose New puzzle for another board.

The controls to know

Tap or click a cell and use the number pad. Keyboard: arrows select cells; digits (and A–G on 16×16) enter values; Backspace erases. Use the control method described here for this activity. Use one clear input at a time.

An example to follow

On one puzzle in this collection, row 1, column 1 has 4 in its solution. Read the clues on your current board before using that value; another puzzle can need a different entry. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Read the matching step again.

Pay attention to this rule

Notes are reminders, not final entries. A full board only counts as complete when it satisfies every rule. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
