Mahjong Solitaire: what to know before playing

Take a moment with Mahjong Solitaire before moving to another game. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

A small practice goal

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Keep the objective visible.

The challenge in front of you

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

Your inputs

Tap two free matching tiles. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

Learn from a sample situation

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Check the stated objective.

Keep this in mind

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. A different version of the game may use a different rule. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
